What is Special Olympics?


Special Olympics is world's largest organization for intellectually disabled individuals providing sports and athletic competition to 170 countries worldwide; about 4.2 million people. More than 70,000 events take place year-round. The Special Olympics World Games alternate between Summer and Winter every 2 years. The next event will take place in Los Angeles, California from July 24, 2015 to August 2, 2015.

Mission Statement:

"The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness,demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community."
